Dear FHASE Members- present and past
Even though it's early, if we want to continue to have our Keuring sites, it's necessary for us to get our Keuring registrations in to FHANA as early as possible.
We here in the southeast have been blessed with later Keuring dates; Huntersville, NC on Tuesday, October 5th, Morristown, Tn. on Wednesday October 6th and Fl, Florida Carriage Museum, Weirsdale Fl. Saturday, October 9th.  Thankfully it should be a bit cooler for all.  Our deadline for forms before the late fees are added in is still August 1st.
If you know other Friesian owners in your area who are not connected to a local club for information, please let them know of the FHANA deadline and their local Keuring date.

Please make completion of your forms early a high priority to insure that we have our sites this year.
If you have any questions please contact me or the site hosts in your immediate FHASE area.
To those who haven't renewed their dues, this will be the last correspondence I will be able to send.  Please support your club and renew today!
Thanks,

Bobbi Fenderson - FHASE President

May
Hello. Let me introduce myself. My name is Maggie Kotuk..  I am a recent transplant from East Hampton New York. My new home and that of my small Friesian herd (numbering six… three fillies and three mares) is in Micanopy FL.  I have lived here less then a year. Bobbi Fenderson FHASE’s president asked me to write up my thoughts on the recent clinic in SC.

To begin, the day before my dear friend and farm manager Chris  and I left for SC I had literally just come home from Holland .

I don’t even need the “in retrospect” stuff to say how happy I was we went.

If you missed the clinic given by B.J. Nerenhausen Wittenberg you missed a lot more then a re-cap of what you could have read on either the FHASE or FHANA websites. Yes, some of the topics:  Evaluating the Friesian Horse, Preparing your Friesian for the Keuring, IBOP testing, Stallion Indexing , Linear Scoring and so on, were ones we are all interested in learning  more about and for some of us, a major  clarification is welcomed. Speaking for myself of course!

To say that  Ms. Whittenberg was generous with her information, her insights and knowledge hardly begins to state the case.  B. J. as she likes to be called, answered every question (there were plenty), with intelligence , insight and good kind humor.

Cheryl Baird, owner, trainer, instructor of Cheryl Baird Stables LLC  was our hostess. Rarely have I ever seen anyone work as hard as Cheryl . She made this clinic a pure delight.   It was a family affair with Cheryl's Mom helping serve lunch and her Dad acting as our official photographer.

Cheryl arranged to have six of her Friesians used in this clinic for our "inspection."  With B. J.'s  guidance we had the opportunity to evaluate and judge them.  All of this helped enormously when we returned home to more clearly and objectively judge our own horses.  AHHHHHH, the only thing missing was a person who could run like the wind with a Friesian in hand. Oh, by the way, Cheryl can run!!!! Immediately after our ‘inspections’ a sumptuous  luncheon was prepared by Cheryl and her parents   .

In the afternoon we were treated to an outdoor presentation where we enjoyed watching two clients of Cheryl’s ride her  Saddle Seat trained Friesians. This was something I had never seen before.  I was taken with yet another attribute  of the Friesian horse; its great versatility as a sport horse.

The day after the clinic Chris and I went into the barn with a pad, pen and camera. One by one we took the mares and fillies out and we did our own inspection. With a blank linear score sheet in hand we rated each one for conformation.( Neither of us, unfortunately, can run fast anymore.)  I know that having this information will be valuable as time passes and we can compare how the horses have grown and/or changed for the better or the worst.

A word of wisdom from B. J... If in doubt, meaning, if you think your horse is not up to its best in terms of conformation and/or  movement, simply wait  another year to take it to the keuring.   Now I can see what she meant while viewing my own horses.

One of my mares now 9 years old (I bought her as a 2 year old) actually matured  poorly given her brilliant lineage of star, model, crown dams. She is full papered but somewhere along the line she missed the boat and is not top notch  ( none of which matters, by the way, because she is a permanent and beloved member of our family) but, what I found interesting after our clinic with B. J. was that if I was the judge,  this particular mare would not have made it even into the stud book.!  I definitely have a lot more (always!) to learn!

Having said that, both Chris and I left the clinic with renewed respect for the judging process and those hearty souls who travel the world to make sure the Friesian horse is healthy and  thriving in the manner in which it was  born to serve.

Thank you B. J., Cheryl and Bobbi for all your efforts, knowledge and your great sense of humor. It was a pleasure!

Warmest regards,

Maggie Kotuk

Dear Members,

We have great news.

FHASE has been awarded the East Coast Educational Clinic being Sponsored by FHANA!  This is one of four such Educational clinics and we are proud to be presenting it for all Friesian owners/lovers along the east coast.
This clinic will be given by none other than Inspection Judge, BJ (Nerenhausen) Wittenberg.
The clinic will be held in Williamston, SC at Cheryl Baird's Stables at Omega Farms, on Saturday, May 22, 2010.  Cheryl has blocked 20 rooms at the Holiday Inn Express, 5 miles from the clinic site and by mentioning "Omega Farms" you will be able to get this room for 64.50 plus tax.  Rate includes breakfast. Further details on the hotel are also on the FHANA registration site.
BJ will cover a variety of subjects and Cheryl will have demonstration Friesians on site.  Subjects to be covered; Evaluating the Friesian Horse, Preparation for Keuring, IBOP testing and Stallion Indexing (to choose a proper stallion when breeding your mare.)
We are very excited to be able to offer this clinic and hope many members will take advantage.
Registration for the clinic will be done through FHANA by going on the www.fhana.com web site and completing the application there.  You can pay by credit card on line if you would like.  Auditor fee includes a catered lunch.
Registration must be in by May 7th to avoid an extra fee.
At the same time, we are going to have to move the FHASE Annual meeting from our usual retreat at my ranch to the evening of this clinic, in SC.  The 8th of May which was our retreat/annual meeting date is Mother's Day weekend and this was causing us to have very few members who could attend.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but hope many will be at the Clinic and we will hold the meeting there.
May is a very pretty month in South Carolina so why not make a special weekend trip and come enjoy the education and the fun!
If you have any questions or I can be of any help please don't hesitate to contact me.
I will be driving from the No. Fl. area to this clinic so if anyone wants to car pool with me, we can meet someplace and I can take at least 5 people.
This will be a great opportunity so don't miss out!

FHANA to Conduct Clinic During Final Stallion Testing

The Education committee's plan is to conduct four (4) clinics throughout North America during this first year, and eventually build to seven (7) clinics.  The first clinic will be held in conjunction with the final stallion testing in Hanford, CA Feb. 22-23, 2010.  This clinic will be free of charge to all attendees, but a small donation to DG Bar Ranch for lunches would be appreciated. DG Bar Ranch is allowing FHANA to conduct this clinic and providing lunches at their facility.

The topics that will be discussed during the clinic will be Evaluating the Friesian Horse and Using Stallion Indexing to Choose a Stallion For Your Mare.  Both BJ and JR have been working tirelessly to put together an educational clinic that will be both informative and up to date with the breeding goals of the KFPS.  KFPS Dutch judge Fetze Veldstra and KFPS Executive Director Ids Hellinga will also be available to answer additional questions.

The clinics will be held in the mornings starting at 9AM on both days with the final stallion testing being conducted in the afternoon.  FHANA encourages all members who would like to attend this free of charge Education clinic to please make reservations with the FHANA office so they can plan for your visit.

Additional clinics are being planned and locations will be announced at a later date.  The cost for additional clinics is still being researched and will be reviewed upon completion of this initial clinic.

Uldrik 457 - 2010 Stallion Show Champion

“Uldrik surprised us with his performance. He was even better during the championship judging than he had been that earlier morning.  He just kept on going.” The jury inspecting the studbook stallions (Harrie Draaijer, Louise Hompe and Jan Hendriks) selected the young stallion Uldrik 457 (Dries 421 x Tsjerk 328P) owned by E.A. Constant as champion of the Stallion Inspection. Uldrik was bred by R.R. Steenbeek in Haskerhorne.

Reserve champion was Norbert 444. Norbert (Tsjerk 328P x Hearke 254P) made a very good impression during all his performances. Time and again, he displayed a beautifully extended trot with a long moment of suspension. The Van der Zee family from St. Jacobiparochie, Norbert’s breeders and owners, were visibly touched by his high placement.
